Lot 2918
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 3.20 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri. Irregular mint, after 321. CONSTANTINVS AVG Laureate and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. BEATA TRANQVILLITAS / STR• Globe set on altar inscribed VO/TIS / XX; above, three stars. Cf. RIC 341 (for possible prototype). Very minor traces of corrosion and with a thin flan crack, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, privately acquired from Spink on 2 September 1999.

This coin displays characteristics of a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation, yet it is well-crafted. Noteworthy unofficial traits include the unbroken obverse legend, crude lettering, and an unusual cuirass. Furthermore, the depiction of bust B5 is not documented in RIC for any BEATA TRANQVILLITAS coin issued under Constantine I at Treveri.
